Research Abstract
After my first book, The Dreyfus Affair and the Novel, a historical and political study, I became interested in contemporary poetry both as a critic and a poet. I published six volumes of poetry in France, writing at the same time studies on major poets such Apollinaire, Reverdy, and Eluard. Since my appointment at UCI in 1967, I have focused on the interactions of poetry and painting, particularly in Surrealism. This new interest led to a number of articles and finally to Surrealism and the Book which focuses mainly on the collaborative efforts of artists such as Bellmer, Cornell, Dalí, Ernst, Masson, Matta, Mirò, Tanguy and their favorite writers, past as well as present, ranging from Lewis Caroll, Kleist, Lautreamont, Mallarmé, and Rimbaud to Breton, Char, Eluard, and Péret as well as such double talents as Arp and Carrington.

Collaboration became the main focus of Magnifying Mirrors: Women, Surrealism, and Partnership, involving couples such as Carrington and Ernst, Sage and Tanguy, Toyen and Styrsky, Péret and Varo, Lee Miller and Man Ray, Kahlo and Rivera. As in this study, researched after my retirement in 1987, painting plays a far more important part than writing, I functioned as an art historian rather than as a literary scholar. Nonetheless, I read graphics much in the same analytical way I had read texts. In my most recent venture, The Cutting Edge of Reading: Artists' Books, written in collaboration with Judd D. Hubert, art plays an even greater part. We deal with a new genre practiced by avant-garde artists who often treat texts as purely visual material.
