Academic Distinctions
Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh, (a.k.a. Kam Kalantar) studied medicine at the Universities of Bonn (Staatsexamen) and Nuremberg (Dr. med. degree) in Germany and also obtained MPH and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from University of California Berkeley. His post-graduate trainings include a medicine/pediatrics residency at SUNY Brooklyn program and a Nephrology fellowship at UCSF. During 2000-2012 Dr. Kalantar served as a faculty nephrologist at Harbor-UCLA and was appointed as Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics and Epidemiology at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and Fielding School of Public Health. Since August 2012, Dr. Kalantar has served as the chief of the Division of Nephrology, Hypertension and Kidney Transplantation, and Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics and Public Health and Nursing Sciences at UCI and oversees educational programs at UCI Medical Center and Long Beach Veteran Administration Medical Center. Prof. Kalantar has passed board certification examinations in Internal Medicine (1997, 2007, 2018), Pediatrics (1997, 2004, 2016) and Nephrology (1999, 2009, 2019). He has been listed in several prestigious top-physician directories including TOP DOCTORS, BEST DOCTORS, Super-Doctors, OCMA Top Physicians, Best Physicians of Los Angeles and Orange County, and Castle-Connolly TOP PHYSICIANS.

Dr Kalantar former co-chair of the joint steering committee of the World Kidney Day (WKD), 2016-2022, past president of the International Society of Renal Nutrition & Metabolism (ISRNM) and International Federation of Kidney Foundation (IFKF), a member of the Boards of Directors of the ESRD Network 18 and the National Forum of the ESRD Networks since 2017, a former council member of the ISN (International Society of Nephrology) 2017-2019.
Appointments
Dr Kalantar has served as a standing member of the NIH study section “Kidney, Nutrition, Obesity and Diabetes” (KNOD, 2009-2013) and NIH "Nursing Related Clinical Sciences" NRCS (2017-2021) and AHRQ Healthcare Effectiveness and Outcome Research "HOER" (2021-2025) and as well as ad-hoc member of several other study sections at NIH, PCORI, VA, including chairing and co-chairing some study sections including VA EPID study section, Department of Defense (DOD), American Diabetic Association (ADA), the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), PCORI, etc. He has had several grants including from the NIH (6x R01’s, R21’s, R44, K24 mid-career award, R13, U01, K23, T35), NKF, and AHA. His research is also supported by a generous philanthropic donation from Mr. Harold Simmons, Mr. Louis Chang, and Dr Joseph Lee (Divisional endowment), and Dr Kalantar is the founder and director of the Harold Simmons Center for Kidney Disease Research & Epidemiology.
Research Abstract
Dr. Kalantar has conducted research and presented numerous invited lectures in national and international conferences on renal nutrition and dietary management of kidney disease, incremental dialysis transition, conservative management of CKD, solitary kidney (including after cancer or donor nephrectomy), kidney disease outcome and CKD epidemiology, cardiovascular risks in CKD, nutritional epidemiology, malnutrition and wasting in chronic diseases, inflammation and cachexia, diabetes and obesity, diabetic nephropathy, continuous glucose monitoring in CKD, proteinuria and foamy urine, renal osteodystrophy and mineral disorders, sodium and potassium disarrays, anemia and iron deficiency, disparities and quality of life in CKD, value-based models in kidney care, CKD/ESRD patient centeredness, gut microbiome in CKD, and acid-base disorders.

Kalantar-Zadeh has authored 5 textbooks, more than 1,000 papers and over 30 chapters. Dr. Kalantar is an editor-in-chief, associate editor, or a member of the editorial board of many renowned peer-reviewed journals including in Nephrology, Nutrition and Public Health including Journal of Renal Nutrition (JReN), serving as co-editor in chief since 2019, Clinical Nutrition (under ESPEN, assoc. editor), Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (NDT, assoc. editor), Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle (JCSM, founding assoc. editor), Nephron (assoc. editor), American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD), Cardiorenal Medicine (CRM), Seminars in Dialysis, Kidney International (KI), Journal of Am Soc Nephrol (JASN), Nature Reviews Nephrol, American Journal of Nephrology (AJN), International Urology and Nephrology (IUN), Clinical Journal of American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), among others
