Research Abstract
My research interests bridge racial-ethnic inequality, gender relations, and social movements. I seek to understand how gendered-racial-ethnic hierarchies are formed by and maintained within formal and informal societal institutions. I am equally concerned with how these hierarchical relations impact social movement outcomes and marriage market pools. My commitment to the study of the intersection of race-ethnicity and gender came out of my initial research for my book on the role of women in the civil rights movement. Discovering how race-ethnicity and gender impacted the leadership roles within movement organizations, and ultimately the outcome of the civil rights movement, prompted a more general interest in their importance as analytical tools for understanding other social phenomena. I have employed racial and gender analyses and shown their conceptual and theoretical importance to the study of emotions, collective identity, and ideology that influence social movement mobilization, sustenance and outcomes. Over the past several years, I have extended my gender and race-ethnic analyses to the marriage market. Undertaking an ambitious data collection effort on racial preferences in on-line dating, I have contributed to our understanding of the gendered racial-ethnic preferences that govern dating relationships and drive interracial marriage patterns.
