Professor Dalton's research focuses on the changing nature of contemporary societies and how theses changes are transforming citizens and their governments. He studies public opinion, voting and partisan politics, and public images of government and its policies. He has researched the changing political activities of citizens in established democracies, and citizen orientations to democracy in developing nations. He is also one of the leading American experts on German politics, especially public opinion in the postwar era. Professor Dalton teaches courses on comparative politics, political culture, and political methodology.
