Premature Infants Receiving Milking or Delayed Cord Clamping: Randomized Controlled Multicenter Non-Inferiority Trial (PREMOD2)

UCIMC is an actively recruiting site for this mutli-institutional randomized clinical trial supported by the NICHD. The trial seeks to investigate the relatively safety and benefits of two commonly used strategies for managing the umbilical cord in preterm infants immediately following delivery. Standardization of Faculty Evaluations
Principle Investigator: Laura Fitzmaurice, MD
Project with Deena McRae, MD, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education to improve and standardize the evaluation by trainees of clinical faculty at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. Research to include perceived usefulness of evaluation results by faculty and evidence of bias in results according to gender and/or race/ethnicity. Status: Evaluation form completed and undergoing revisions based on feedback from stakeholders, writing IRB application, and seeking potential sources of funding.

Perception of Programmatic Wellness Initiatives by Post-Graduate Year in Obstetrics and Gynecology Residents.

Secondary analysis of national survey results and a CREOG Wellness Subcommittee research initiative, this project explores how OB/GYN residents at different PGY levels perceive wellness interventions as part of their residency training. Status: submitted for publication, awaiting response.

Teaching Wellness Skills: effect of a curriculum designed to increase physician resilience on obstetrics and gynecology intern burnout, mindfulness and self-compassion.
Principal Investigator: Laura Fitzmaurice, MD
A prospective, longitudinal cohort, mixed-methods evaluation of a 12-hour curriculum taught to a obstetrics and gynecology interns, including evaluation of paired samples comparing burnout, mindfulness and self-compassion results before and after the curriculum. Conducted in collaboration with Marriage and Family Therapy faculty at Chapman University. Status: Interim and Final data from 2-year experience presented at national and international meetings, respectively. Status: currently being written up for publication.

Wellness series, Academic Year 2016-17: approximately 40 hours total didactics across all 4 classes of OB/GYN residents of didactics sessions aimed at improving resident wellness, including process groups, mindfulness training, reflective writing, self-compassion, nutrition and others. Repeated curriculum academic year 2017-18 and 2019-20 with R1 class only (7 learners, approx. 12 hours each year).

10. Wellness for combined fellowship didactics series. 2 hours (approx. 12 learners) annually on rotating physician wellness topics such as value-based decision-making, self-compassion, generosity, empathy, second-victim syndrome, and peer support.

11. “Pre-Sub-I Boot Camp,” with Dr. Christine Kim, full day (8-hour) didactic covering core Obstetrics and Gynecology topics and skills relevant to excellent performance on sub-internships, held annually for approximately 10 third-year medical students. Repeated annually since 2017.

12. “Pre-intern Boot Camp,” with Dr. Christine Kim and UC Riverside OB/GYN faculty, two day (16-hour) didactic session covering core Obstetrics and Gynecology topics and skills to prepare forth year medical students to start their internships, April 7 and 8, 2017, curriculum updated and repeated annually since.
