Abstract
My research focuses on defining novel cellular mechanisms of lung injury and repair in prematurely born infants with special focus on bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). BPD is an important cause of respiratory illness that afflicts 30-75% of prematurely born infants based on gestational age. Infants with severe BPD have abnormalities of pulmonary function, neurodevelopment, and growth. Nearly 50% of infants with BPD die from respiratory failure and unremitting pulmonary hypertension and heart failure.

I am exploring the novel role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in improving lung development in BPD. My prior work utilizing mouse models of BPD have shown that treatments with MSCs prevent and reverse mouse BPD via paracrine and immunomodulatory mechanisms. We are currently investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of MSC action which is proposed to be via secreted factors. To better understand how these secreted factors (markers) might correlate with the evolution and resolution of lung injury, another focus is to characterize these markers in the tracheal aspirate fluid of premature infants and determine their role in BPD. This work will likely help us identify new signaling systems involved in BPD, produce important biomarkers for predicting disease, inform the application of specific lung-sparing therapies, and ultimately improve the outcomes of premature babies at risk for BPD. This work is funded by two separate California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Awards as well as by local grant from Neonatology Division.
