Short Biography
Dr. Ghoniem is currently Professor and Vice-Chair at the UC Irvine Health School of Medicine, Department of Urology, and Chief, Division and fellowship program director of Female Urology, Voiding Dysfunction and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. He is also Chief of Spinal Cord Urology at Long Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Dr. Ghoniem is nationally and internationally pioneer and expert in the field of Female urology, Pelvic Reconstructive surgery, and Voiding dysfunction.
He was born in Alexandria and graduated from Alexandria Medical School in November 1974. His fellowship training in neurourology and female urology was at Brown University in Rhode Island. He joined Tulane University in 1987 and promoted to a full tenure professor of urology & gynecology in 1998. He joined Cleveland Clinic in 2000 and UC Irvine in 2011.
Dr. Ghoniem has improved and introduced many diagnostic and surgical techniques in the field of urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse such as OAB, ISD classification, vaginal pack test, suburethral sling, Genisphere injection, bladder neck wrap, male sling, and trans obturator technique.
He is an inventor and has a patent for a device to treat OAB.
He has 256 publications (185 peer-reviewed papers, 35 chapters, 2 books, 5 special journal issues as editor, 29 surgical videos). Abstracts, monograms, etc are not included
He trained 39 fellows, few of them professors and two are department chairs.
He received many awards including life achievement award 2017 from SUFU. He is elected to be the chair of International Continence Society meeting, Las Vegas 2020.
