Research Abstract |
Dr. Sorooshian's research focuses on surface hydrology, primarily in the area of rainfall-runoff modeling. He has devoted much of his effort to model identification and calibration issues and has developed special estimation criteria to account for the uncertainties of calibration data. Other research interests include the application of remote sensing data for characterization of hydrologic parameters and fluxes and the implication of climate variability and change in water resources. He also consults on problems related to surface hydrology and flood forecasting. In 2007, the UNESCO Great Man-made River Prize was awarded to his research group at the Center for Hydrometorology & Remote Sensing (CHRS) and co-recipient U of AZ center SAHRA (Sustainability of semi-Arid Hydrologic and Riparian Areas. Professor Sorooshian was the founding Director of both research centers. CHRS is actively engaged in research for NASA, NOAA, NSF, and the USNWS. Current and recent projects include: NASA “The Challenges of Utilizing Satellite Precipitation Data for Hydrologic Applications” “Improving Satellite Precipitation Estimation for Weather and Climate Application Using Multiple Instruments On TRMM and Other Satellites “Towards an EOS-Enhanced Hydrological Prediction System” “Monitoring and Prediction of Water Distribution/ Availability Semi-Arid Regions” “Improving Water Resources Management in the Western U.S. Through use of Remote Sensing Data and Seasonal Climate Forecasts” “An Integrated Information System For Multi-Purpose User-Adaptive Access To Land Surface Hydrologic and Water Resources Data (HyDIS)” “Impacts of Irrigation on Regional Climate, Hydrology Variability” NOAA "Investigating Southwestern United States hydroclimate intraseasonal variability through enhancing land surface representations in a regional climate model" “Predicting North American Monsoon Rainfall Using Mesoscale Modeling with an Emphasis of Satellite data Assimilation” “Improving Meteorological and Hydrological Predictions of the Semi-Arid Regions” “Evaluation of Seasonal Hydroclimatic Forecasts from Water Management” NSF/UAZ "NSF-Science and Technology Center for Sustainability of semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas” UC/NLRP (University of California/National Labs Research Program) “Enhancing California Water Resource Decision Support System” |
