Research Abstract
Robert Beck is Assistant Professor of Education and Director of the Center for Collaborative Research in Education in the Department of Education, University of California, Irvine. He teaches in the Ed.D. program in Educational Leadership. Beck has a Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Chicago. He has conducted experimental research on the effectiveness of teaching prompts in enabling credential program student teachers to research a multimedia database of cultural information for the purpose of improving their interpretive and essay writing skills. Beck has also conducted research in children's recall and comprehension of movies and specified maternal strategies for facilitating children's learning from media stores. Robert Beck is currently Principal Investigator of a federal capacity-building grant to prepare teachers to use technology in teaching. He is also the evaluator of a state grant that is testing the effects of computer networking 120 literacy teachers (grades 4-8). The teachers in the study will share lesson plans and participate in on-line training to improve their proficiencies in applying California Content Standards to students' writing. Teachers' proficencies in writing assessment are predicted to have a positive effect on their students' writing performance.
