Abstract
My research is focused on understanding the processes by which the visible world is constructed by the brain. I am especially interested in cataloguing the dimensions of preattentive visual sensitivity--that is, I would like to functionally characterize those processes that spontaneously discriminate between qualitatively different regions of the visual field. I use texture segmentation experiments to study these questions. In collaboration with Ted Wright (UCI) and Hal Stern (UCI), I am also developing new experimental and statistical methods (called equisalience function analysis) for analyzing the functional architecture of human perception and cognition.
