Abstract
Professor Taagepera is interested in quantitative models for politics and history and also in Baltic and Finno-Ugric area studies. His current work deals with predicting the number and size of parties on the basis of electoral systems, and the consequences for government stability. He has published a prize-winning book on Seats and Votes in co-authorship with a graduate student, and this line of work offers many research opportunities for insightful graduate students. Professor Taagepera has also constructed and tested models for arms races, increase in world population, and growth of historical empires. He has written books on contemporary Baltic history and the Finno-Ugric republics within the Russian Federation. His graduate seminars have included electoral systems and the history of government.
