Research Abstract |
Francesca Cancian's research focuses on gender, carework, family, and Latina/o communities. She offers courses in these areas, as well as in sexual assault and participatory and applied research. Her current research examines how the education system, gender and families impact Latina mothers going to community college. The project combines basic research with interventions to make education more accessable to low income people. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University, and her publications include CARING AND GENDER (with Stacey Oliker), LOVE IN AMERICA, and CHILD CARE AND INEQUALITY (edited with Demie Kurz and others). She has recently been active in organizing the national "Carework Network," a group of researchers working on child care, health care, welfare policies, elder care. She is former president of the Pacific Sociological Assaociation, and of Sociologists for Women in Society, and has been Director of Women's Studies at UCI. |
