Research Abstract
Summary of Research Interests: Paul Jesilow is Associate Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of numerous articles and books on the topic including Doing Justice in the People's Court: Sentencing by Municipal Court Judges, and Myths That Cause Crime, which was selected by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences as Outstanding Book of the Year.

Professor Jesilow is best known for his research on white-collar crime, in particular fraud by doctors participating in Medicaid. He and his colleagues, Gilbert Geis and Henry Pontell, completed a federally funded project which examined, among other things, the health care enforcement system, factors that promote fraudulent behavior in third party payment programs, as well as physicians' explanations for their criminal activities. Results from this project have appeared in respected medical journals, including JAMA, Medical Care, and the Journal of the American Psychiatric Association. A book, Prescription for Profit: How Doctors Defraud Medicaid, co-authored by Paul Jesilow, was published in 1993 by the University of California Press.

Professor Jesilow's current interest in policing focuses on community-policing. Much of his work has been with the Santa Ana Police Department (P. Jesilow, J. Meyer, D. Parsons, W. Tegeler, "Evaluating Problem-Oriented Policing: A Quasi-Experiment." Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management; P. Jesilow, J. Meyer, N. Namazzi, "Public Attitudes Towards the Police." American Journal of the Police, 19(2) (1995): 67-88), although he has also consulted with departments in other states and internationally.
