Research Abstract |
Optical Spectroscopy and Selective Photochemistry in Cells and Tissues. My research involves the development of optical techniques to non-invasively monitor and perturb physiological processes in tissues and cells. In order to describe the optical characteristics of thick tissues we have developed a method, known as Photon Migration, that can be used to quantitatively measure light scattering and absorption on a picosecond timescale. We have devised biophysical models and constructed instrumentation for measuring parameters such as hemoglobin oxygenation, tissue water content, relative blood volume, and cell size/shape. We are currently applying this technology to non-invasive functional imaging of tumors and dysplastic lesions in human breast, brain, cervix, and uterus. Complementary strategies based on photodynamic inactivation are used to selectively treat cancers upon diagnosis. |
