Academic Distinctions
Roger Walsh MD., Ph.D., D.H.L. graduated from Queensland University with degrees in psychology, physiology, neuroscience and medicine. He then came to the United States as a Fulbright scholar to study psychiatry at Stanford University where he passed clinical licensing exams in medicine, psychology and psychiatry. He is currently professor of psychiatry, philosophy and anthropology, and a professor in the Religious Studies Program at the University of California at Irvine.

His interests focus on topics such as exceptional psychological health and wellbeing, practices to cultivate them such as meditation, yoga and lifestyle, virtues such as wisdom and altruism, transpersonal and integral studies, and the psychological roots of our global crises. His publications include the books Meditation, Paths Beyond Ego, The World of Shamanism, and The World's Great Wisdom. His research and writings have received over twenty national and international awards and honors as well as an honorary doctorate, while his teaching has received one national and six university awards. He was named the University of California Irvine Outstanding Physician and also the University’s Distinguished Writer.

Contemplative practices have been very important to him and he has practiced, researched, and taught them for over three decades. In his misspent youth he worked in the circus as an acrobat and more recently graduated from the Comedy College and then had a very brief and unsuccessful career as a standup comedian.
