Appointments
Professor Widgerow completed his undergraduate and post-graduate studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He was the top surgical graduate at the University of Witwatersrand in 1989. He has held various positions in numerous academic and professional associations including that of President of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery of Southern Africa (APRSSA). He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was appointed Honorary Professor by the Senate of Wits University in 1999. He is author of over 110 plastic surgical related publications and 2 books. He is currently editor-in-chief of Wound Healing Southern Africa. He was also the founder and medical director of 11 wound clinics in South Africa. His current fields of interest are translational basic science research, medical device innovations, tissue engineering and wound healing.

After 20 years in private plastic surgical practice in South Africa, Prof Widgerow relocated to Irvine California in Dec 2009 to pursue his interests in research, medical device innovations and wound care, but he still plays an active role in academic medicine world-wide. In August 2012 he joined the University of California Irvine Plastic Surgery Division as Clinical Professor and Director Center for Tissue Engineering. He has redesigned and introduced major Research projects to the CTE Lab and has entered submissions on multiple Grant proposals. He has recruited a team of 20 researchers and runs a vibrant, dynamic research facility at UCIMC where he is currently Division CHief of Research
Research Abstract
CTE is actively involved in the following projects:
• Collaborative partnership with Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF) exploring the use of acellular adipose derived matrices in fat generation – coming to completion
• Investigation of adipose derived stem cells with PRP for conversion of scar tissue to adipocytes – scar conversion program and Dupytrens Disease investigations
• Development of ‘bubbled’ oxygenated solution for use in wound healing, fat grafting, tissue transplantation storage solution, acute major trauma injuries and in vitro laboratory settings for increasing exposure to oxygenated solutions. Device designed for oxygen generation in collaboration with BME
• Generation of cartilage engineered frameworks using unique adipose derived matrices, chondrocytes and adipose derived stem cells. Collaborative effort with MTF, IDME, BME, UCI (3-D printing) and Lakey laboratory. Secondary exploration of human cartilage decell/recell possibilities
• Stress induction of adipose lipoaspirate to yield high proportions of progenitor cells useful for fat graft enrichment (reconstruction, breast etc, aesthetic indications) and for therapeutic autologous use in wound healing. The stress induction device has been designed in conjunction with Haun laboratory (BME, UCI)

Short Biography
Professor Widgerow is a plastic surgeon who ran a solo private practice in South Africa for over 20 years. He has held various positions in numerous academic and professional associations including that of President of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery of Southern Africa (APRSSA). He is author of over 170 plastic surgical related publications and 2 books. He was also the founder and medical director of 11 wound clinics in South Africa. Prof Widgerow relocated to Irvine California in Dec 2009 to pursue his interests in medical device innovations, cosmeceuticals and wound care, but he still plays an active role in academic medicine world-wide. In 2012 he was appointed to the Faculty of the University of California Irvine Plastic Surgery Dept as Full Adjunct Professor and Director of the Center for Tissue Engineering and in 2021 was appointed as its Division Chief of Research. He is involved in multiple projects related to adipose derived stem cell and adipose decellularized matrix, wound healing and transplantation. In 2018 he was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Mentor of the year Award by the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, UCI. Dr Widgerow has developed and licensed multiple products in the US and South African markets. In 2015 he joined ALASTIN Skincare, Inc. an early start up professional skin care company as their Chief Medical Officer. Over the past 6 years he has spearheaded the scientific innovations team introducing multiple new products based on novel wound healing pathways. The resulting products have been validated with gene expression, in vitro testing, biopsies, and multiple clinical trials resulting in a range of products that have surpassed previous scientific validations in this space. He continues to pursue patented novel concepts, peptide technologies and vigorous testing thus contributing to Alastin Skincare’s position as the fastest growing professional skin care company in the US for the past 4 years.
