Ultrasound, acoustical microscopy, medical imaging, inverse scattering, bioeffects.

Dr. Jones has pioneered many new developments in ultrasonic imaging, ultrasonic tissue characterization, and acoustical microscopy. Additional topics of professional interest include the integration of medical imaging modalities, general applications of ultrasound technology, the inverse scattering problem, the physiological effects of ultrasound and electromagnetic radiation, nonlinear acoustics, the biophysics of cells and tissue structures, the popularization of science and technology.

POSSIBLE INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS: New diagnostic techniques for early detection and monitoring of disease processes; in situ pathological evaluation using acoustical microscopy technology, noninvasive characterization of materials and/or tissues including atherosclerotic plaque and thrombus; nondestructive testing of materials at the microscopic level using acoustical microscopy; testing of drugs and/or therapeutic modalities without the use of animals (with the minimal use of animals); minimally invasive removal or destruction of material (or tissue) at selected positions without harming intervening structures.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS FOR RESEARCH: Implementation of in-vivo acoustical microscopy system; theoretical and experimental studies of various ultrasonic tissue characterization methods; development of methods for the measurement of the biophysical and physiological properties of cells in culture; continued studies of the inverse scattering problem; development of quantitative ultrasonic imaging methods; bioeffects of ultrasound at the molecular level; continued studies of the physiological effects of ultrasound irradiation.
